Why Credit Report Scores are Different

Many people wonder why there are credit score differences from the three major reporting agencies. In case you are not familiar with them the three major credit reporting agencies are:

  • Trans Union
  • Equifax
  • Experian

The primary reason your credit score differs is because they have access to different data and each has their own scoring model. Experian calls is a Beacon score, Experian calls is the Fair Isaac Score, and Trans Union calls is a Empirica Score.

Credit Report Scores So how can you use the credit score differences to your advantage? Let’s say for example you had a 500 credit score on the Trans Union report and a 575 credit score on the Equifax report. Conventional wisdom would say that if you were applying for a loan. other than a no credit check loan, you would get better rates and terms with a 575 credit score than you would with a 500 credit score. Wouldn’t it be nice if you knew which lenders use which credit report when they evaluate your application?

Unfortunately there is not a good way to tell which credit report lenders will use. Trans Union is most popular in the Midwest states and Equifax is more popular in states like Georgia.

The fair credit reporting act entitles you to a free copy of your credit report from each to the three reporting agencies once per year. We recommend that you take advantage of this and order your credit report from these agencies. Once you have a copy you will notice that the reports do not contain your credit score. This is an additional service that they charge for.

Even though these reports do not have your credit score you should evaluate them and look for differences or errors on the report, if you find errors or erroneous information on the report you can dispute them directly with the credit reporting agencies by visiting their websites.
